Hailed as “Conscience” of the Congress by Speaker Pelosi.
The flag-draped coffin bearing the body of longtime Representative John Lewis will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda through Tuesday in a tribute to his life-long dedication to civil rights.
On the way to Capitol Hill, the motorcase with the hearse carrying Lewis passed by Washington landmarks important to American civil rights: The Lincoln Memorial and the memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi called Lewis a “titan of the civil rights movement and then the conscience of the United States Congress.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, “John Lewis lived and worked with urgency because the task was urgent.”
A member of Congress since 1987, the 80-year-old Lewis died July 17 of pancreatic cancer.
